The Jeep Renegade is due for a mid-model update, and a development vehicle has been spotted undergoing tests in the Swiss Alps. Like the forthcoming facelifted Fiat 500X which was also spotted running trials earlier, the Renegade is based upon GM-Fiat’s Small Wide platform for the group’s B-segment SUVs.
This forthcoming update for the Jeep Renegade is tipped to be somewhat cosmetic; our sources suggest that this facelift will bring no changes to its powertrain. Currently, Jeep’s B-segment SUV has had a run with six Fiat engines – four MultiAir petrol units and two MultiJet II diesel mills.
These can be mated to either a five- or six-speed manual gearbox, six-speed dry-clutch DCT or a nine-speed automatic, with outputs channeled to either the front wheels or all four, the latter featuring Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system. Use of the same platform should mean staying with McPherson struts in front and Chapman struts at the back, suspension-wise.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Renegade will go through the update with the ‘Trail Rated’ Trailhawk variant of the current line-up still included, which augments its off-road abilities with a low-range four-wheel drive system, 20 mm-higher ride height, a ‘Rock’ setting on the Selec-Terrain system for rock crawling, all-terrain tyres, skid plates and tow hooks.
Images of the Renegade’s interior have yet to surface; however, the modest scope of changes to its exterior could be reflected in the cabin, along with the latest in the company’s infotainment equipment. Might it retain the inclusion of Easter Eggs in the interior, such as the topographical map built into its storage tray? Time will tell. The updated Jeep Renegade is expected to reach dealers in 2019.
